“Last year, I participated in a gathering at the important grassroots contemporary art space Obrera Centro in Mexico City. The event explored the intersections of art and activism through both articulations of community culinary expressions, as all attendees were invited to bring something to share and we created great abundance as a metaphor of collective power. The gathering also created space for presentations on the experiences of the role that cultural expression, independent media, and the arts can play in grassroots organizing. 

At this event, the collective of Indigenous female artists, Fogata Kejtsitani, who work directly in their autonomous community, Cherán K’eri in the state of Michoacán, spoke on the ways that art has been a tool for conflict resolution/mediation in the community. This is important because Cherán has broken away from military police forces who have been blocked from entering the community for well over a decade. The women from the Fogata Kejtsitani spoke about the power of the arts as a tool for mediation within the community and a tactic to bring local parties in conflict into dialogue toward resolution. 

During the event, the attendees were organized in three working tables, each one under one main topic, guided by a zine with questions raised during the 13th anniversary of the autonomous movement of Cherán K’eri, and illustrated by Víctor Durán Arzola. For that zine project, launched during the event, I included an essay on the ways that I have worked through the arts and autonomous media to build support for migrant justice movements and Palestine solidarity organizing through culture, including street art and postering. During the work tables at the event, journalists, artists, activists, social organizers, shared ideas and wrote them in what became a second zine, full with insights for social organizing in urban contexts. 

I am happy to share a PDF of these zines through Justseeds, most importantly as a window for people to learn more about Cherán K’eri and access this publication of cross-border dialogue between social movement actors engaged at the frontline intersections of art and activism.

“El año pasado, participé en un encuentro en el importante espacio de arte contemporáneo de base, Obrera Centro, en la Ciudad de México. El evento exploró las intersecciones del arte y el activismo a través de la articulación de las expresiones culinarias comunitarias. Se invitó a todos los asistentes a traer algo para compartir, lo que generó una gran abundancia como metáfora del poder colectivo. El encuentro también generó espacio para presentaciones sobre las experiencias del papel que la expresión cultural, los medios independientes y las artes pueden desempeñar en la organización de base.

En este evento, el colectivo de artistas indígenas Fogata Kejtsitani, que trabaja directamente en su comunidad autónoma, Cherán K’eri, en el estado de Michoacán, habló sobre cómo el arte ha sido una herramienta para la resolución de conflictos y la mediación en la comunidad. Esto es importante porque Cherán se ha separado de las fuerzas policiales militares, a las que se les ha impedido el acceso a la comunidad durante más de una década. Las mujeres de Fogata Kejtsitani hablaron sobre el poder de las artes como herramienta de mediación dentro de la comunidad y como táctica para que las partes locales en conflicto dialoguen. Durante el evento, los asistentes se organizaron en tres mesas de trabajo, cada una bajo un tema principal, guiadas por un fanzine con preguntas planteadas durante el 13.º aniversario del movimiento autónomo de Cherán K’eri, ilustrado por Víctor Durán Arzola. Para este proyecto de fanzine, lanzado durante el evento, incluí un ensayo sobre las formas en que he trabajado a través de las artes y los medios autónomos para generar apoyo a los movimientos por la justicia migratoria y la organización de solidaridad con Palestina a través de la cultura, incluyendo el arte callejero y la cartelería. Durante las mesas de trabajo del evento, periodistas, artistas, activistas y organizadores sociales compartieron ideas y las escribieron en lo que se convirtió en un segundo fanzine, repleto de perspectivas para la organización social en contextos urbanos.

Me complace compartir un PDF de estos fanzines a través de Justseeds, principalmente como una ventana para que la gente aprenda más sobre Cherán K’eri y acceda a esta publicación de diálogo transfronterizo entre actores del movimiento social que participan en las intersecciones de primera línea del arte y el activismo.

Ambos fanzines fueron editados por la maravillosa Beatriz Paz Jiménez, quien también organizó el evento.
