This is the twenty-first pack of free fonts designed by one of cooperative members of Justseeds. This installment features Avoid Grotesk, a blocky sans serif font adapted by Kevin Yuen Kit Lo.
“Avoid Grotesk is an industrial sans-serif modeled after lettering seen on an anonymously designed poster for the International Day of Solidarity with Palestine produced by the Organization of Arab Students in the early 1980s [pictured below]. Though likely hand-drawn, the letters feel like they are roughly carved out of solid blocks of wood, with rounded characters squared-off and defined by the interior curves of their counters. Avoid Grotesk regularizes the character shapes and proportions through simple geometry while highlighting the distinguishing gestures of the original lettering.
Avoid was drawn over the course of a week where I avoided almost everything else, work, sleep, social obligations, feelings… hence the name of the typeface, a design emerging from avoidance inspired by a historical and present-day crisis we have the duty not to avoid.”

This Creative Commons license means that these fonts can be used, shared, and adapted; attributed when appropriate; and any adaptations must fall under the same license. These fonts can be used for activist projects of all sorts. These fonts can also be used for liberatory social and cultural productions. These fonts are not for sale and must be shared freely.
