Making Art for Movements: Roger Peet on “Art in Action” radio

June 11, 2025

Earlier this year I was invited onto the podcast “Art in Action”, hosted by Justseeds fellow-traveler Stefan Christoff on Free City Radio in MontrĂ©al, Canada. It was a very interesting conversation, and I had the chance to explain some of my ideas about how art works in social movements, when it works, and also crucially when it doesn’t. Now that it’s been released, I think it’s worth a listen! You can check it out here.

The image I chose to accompany this post is of a strike rally at Powell’s Books in downtown Portland OR. In this image you can see a depiction of one of the problems that protest imagery sometimes runs into- the cool and clever individual signs that attendees are holding are pretty much illegible- but the big bold strike banner (which I made) is something that can be read half a mile away. For more thoughts on what I think are good ways to use art in action, listen to the podcast!
