February 14th, 1974, in the midst of the Mexican dirty war against the armed student uprising, the Mexican government assaulted “Security House” in Nepantla, near Mexico City. There they masacred a cell of what would be known 20 years later as the Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (Zapatista Army of National Liberation).

30 years after that 14th of February, the EZLN sent out a communique saying:

“Today, February 14, is the day which we dedicate every year to the memory of the sorrow of our struggle: the memory of our dead. It is for this reason that the General Command of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation is releasing today, publicly, the complete list of the dead and disappeared zapatistas who fell in the fighting of 1994.”

“Ten years after the beginning of the war against forgetting, and on this day dedicated to those fallen in struggle, the EZLN salutes the memory of these zapatistas, Chiapas indigenous in the majority, who died for the Indian peoples and for…

Democracy!

Liberty!

Justice!

From the mountains of the Mexican Southeast. By the Clandestine Revolutionary Indigenous Committee – General Command of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation.”

To commemorate February 14th, I elaborated this poster, based off a photograph by Tina Modotti, an Italian communist photographer who lived in Mexico in the 1920s. In the photo is a woman carrying a red communist flag, that was published in its time the newspaper El Machete and other newspapers in the struggle.
