Mushrooms are magical (not like that! well, not always like that...) and so is CMYK printing.
I created these five-layer hand-pulled silkscreen prints initially as a demo for my Screenprinting class, and printed a small edition on nice cardstock to send them out into the world. The image is based on a photo I took of chanterelles I found while hiking in Michigan's Upper Peninsula last August while on vacation with my studio mates. The print was created by separating out the channels of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, adding a halftone pattern at differing angles, and printing them one-by-one. The final layer, printed in sparkly violet ink, is a hand-drawn mushroom pattern from fabric I hand-printed at Women's Studio Workshop back in 2019, inspired by the film Fantastic Fungi. If you look closely you can find the words remembrance, resistance and resilience, as I was also inspired by Trans Day of Remembrance, and how very queer and non-binary fungi truly is. Possibility and inspiration for modes of being and interconnectedness for us all.
From a distance this looks like a vibrant full-color photograph with drawing laid overtop. Upon close looking, one can see all the tiny halftone dots that make up the full-color spectrum - magic!
