In the summer of 2011, Justseeds participated in the Pittsburgh Biennial. For that exhibit we filled a large, high-ceiling room at the Miller Gallery with make-shift billboards dealing with immigration issues. I painted a billboard about Macho B - one of the last free-roaming jaguars in North America (d. March 2, 2009). Posting images of the billboard online quickly put me in touch with Janay Brun, who worked intimately with Macho B and was the whistleblower in the legal battle after his untimely death under suspect circumstances. Jessica McPherson and I did a long interview about the case with Janay last summer (in two parts here and here), and Janay and I subsequently collaborated on a design for a print to be included in the Justseeds/Culture Stirike portfolio "Migration Now!"
This is a full-color digital edition of that image from the portfolio, with some additional colors. Text by Janay Brun, image by Shaun Slifer.
In late 2015, Janay released her book Cloak and Jaguar: Following a Cat from Desert to Courtroom.
