Santuario. Sanctuary City. All welcome. We protect each other. Our cities have always been built by immigrants, have always served as the natural sanctuaries for those escaping oppression elsewhere, places not just to build free lives, but where our human culture evolves: refugees, migrants, with or without papers, transgender folks, women seeking abortion and reproductive care, all those who are called “illegal” in other places. I was inspired by signs for shorebird sanctuaries – these birds can be found in the San Francisco Bay Area, many migratory, representing the diversity of all whom we welcome and whom we commit to protect.

Santuario. Ciudad santuario.

Linoleum block in progress of being carved, with the words "Santuario" at the top, and a variety of shorebirds, along with the words in Spanish "Refugiado," "Migrante," "Con o sin papeles," "Transgénero," and "Busca aborto."
