Sonic Riots

1n 1920, women incarcerated at New York’s Bedford Hills Correctional Facility staged multiple sonic riots. “Devil’s chorus sung by girl rioters,” read a headline. One of these women, Esther Brown, is immortalized in Saidiya Hartman’s essay “The Anarchy of Colored Girls Assembled in a Riotous Manner.”

This CPH poster printed at the worker-owned and union-run Community Printers, Santa Cruz, CA.
