On October 17, 1969, fourteen Black student-athletes from the University of Wyoming football team were unfairly dismissed for requesting permission to wear black armbands in peaceful protest during an upcoming game against Brigham Young University, which is affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Standing in solidarity with the Black Student Alliance, the athletes sought to draw attention to the church's discriminatory policy that barred African Americans from becoming priests. Their expulsion had lasting consequences, costing the young men their scholarships and jeopardizing both their education and future football careers. The incident ignited nationwide conversations about civil rights, racial justice, and the role of protest in sports.
