bell hooks’ essay “Love as the Practice of Freedom” in Outlaw Culture: Resisting Representations, asks us to consider the political manifestations of self-love, and how this love propels us towards self-determination.
As hooks writes:
“The moment we choose to love, we begin to move against domination, against oppression. The moment we choose to love we begin to move towards freedom, to act in ways that liberate ourselves and others. That action is the testimony of love as the practice of freedom.”

Image description: Purple text on an tan brick wall states the moment we choose to love we begin to move towards freedom. A heart shaped hole has been punched through the brick and mortar and a rope for escape has been dropped to the other side. Through the hole in the wall, the dark blue night sky is visible with a crescent moon, the big dipper constellation, and the north star.
