Xoli/Axolotl represents ancestral magical creatures, links to a deep past. The xoloitzcuintli, the hairless Mexican dog, accompanies the dead on their journey to Mictlan. Below is the endangered amphibian axolotl, found in the wild only in the remnants of the great lake Texcoco that Mexico City is built atop. The Xoli dog is based on my friend’s companion.
