As a designer, Arley-Rose Torsone’s goal has always been to create beautiful things that serve a meaningful purpose. She graduated from Parsons the New School for Design in 2004 and fled NYC to Providence where she claimed her stake as the in-house graphic designer for AS220, a local arts non-profit. After meeting the love of her life – a printmaking maven named Morgan Calderini who started the Community Printshop at AS220 – the two decided to branch off and start their own business doing exactly what they love: designing and printing for a good cause. They started Ladyfingers Letterpress in 2011, got married and have been designing things for people in love ever since.
The piece: In 2011, Rhode Island passed a bill allowing same-sex couples to enter a civil union, which would have been good news if it hadn’t been for the fact that it was supposed to be a bill passing full and equal marriage. With the bill still hot on the House floor, Speaker Gordon Fox sensed that the concept of equal marriage would be too hard to swallow by our largely Catholic state, so the openly gay speaker sacrificed the terms in order to make “some” progress rather than none at all. Upon hearing the news, Arley (who was “engayged” at the time) was not only disappointed, but downright offended. Taking matters into her own hands, she decided to send the message back to the lawmakers that they’re sucking the life out of our state’s cultural livelihood.
