As Israeli missiles rained down on Gaza in November, Bay Area Art Queers Unleashing Power (BAAQUP) took over advertising space at two Bay Area Rapid Transit stations to counter Israel’s claims of eternal victimhood…
The BAAQUP graphic depicted a wolf in sheep’s clothing and was made to fit the 58 x 45 inch advertising kiosks. The top caption reads “Israel, You’re Not Fooling Anyone,” and the bottom says “All Wolf Since 1948.” In 1948, the United Nations voted to partition Palestine and award the Jewish state two-thirds of the land of historic Palestine, although Jews made up roughly one-third of the population. After the partition vote, the new Israeli army and terrorist groups destroyed at least 400 Palestinian villages and towns and expelled over 700,000 Palestinians from their homeland; nearly all of the refugees remain in forced exile today.
BAAQUP formed in 2009 to challenge the hegemony of corporate advertising and reclaim public spaces for socially conscious artistic expression. They have done dozens of installations in advertising kiosks and transit stations. Other samples of their work can be found here.
The wolves were installed at the MacArthur and West Oakland BART stations.
