Today is Youm al-Ard يوم الأرض Land Day. My friends remind me that this day commemorates a massacre of 6 Palestinians resisting the stealing of thousands of acres of land in the Galilee by the Zionists. It is a day of mourning and an Indigenous day of steadfastness and purpose towards land and water protection.
During my trip in 2009, I saw folks in Jerusalem mark this day with planting of trees and reemphasizing their connection to the earth. All eyes on Silwan!
March 30th, 2018 we saw creative resistance in Gaza against the Zionist blockade and demanding right of return.
Today we continue to support these same demands for justice and freedom for all of Palestine. I borrowed the phrase “from the rind to the seed” from Anees’s lines in the song Hind’s Hall 2. To me this art is a prayer for the right of return, abundance of food for all, especially the people in Gaza being starved right now during what is one of the holiest months of the year and today on Eid when we should be able to celebrate, it is a day of mourning.
So many people inspire me, for all the unnamed uninstagramed farmers, home cooks, and medicine people, the felaheen tending the land and attempting life and resistance. We have so far failed to stop this gen0cid3 but we will not give up. We do not forget.
