About the artist: Jeanette Arellano – based in Milwaukee – is a proud public school art teacher, cultural worker and artist who identifies as a Latinx cisgender mujerx. She teaches at la Escuela Elemental Hayes Bilingüe/Hayes Bilingual Elementary School. She advocates and creates work in support of Milwaukee’s Latino community and the immigrant rights movement. She collaborates with many artist-activist groups including Voces De Los Artistas (VDLA), Art Build Workers, and Raices Revolucionarias. She co-founded AyudaMutua MKE – an all volunteer collective that was formed to address food justice for residents on the city’s South Side for all families, including those without documentation status. Jeanette also teaches citizenship classes to adults through Voces de la Frontera. Jeanette is a union member with Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association (MTEA). She, along with a group of similarly dedicated art teachers, formed an art education advocacy committee through MTEA which successfully lobbied the school board to commit to better supporting students and art teachers in the district.
A young child with brown skin and black hair, wearing a gray coat and a red cap, screams out as he holds a sign which reads: “PROTéGEME A MI NO ARMAS.” The word “ARMAS” has a pink circle with a line through it. The background is a blue and yellow zigzagged speech bubble bursting outward.
