In our Thousands

“In our thousands, in our millions, we are all Palestinians…” is not just an articulation of solidarity, a call to see ourselves in “the other,” but to know that what Palestinians in Gaza and the Occupied Territories are facing is coming for the rest of us who resist colonial and imperialist domination. It is a call against fragmentation. As the resistance of Palestinians multiplies, so must our own resistance across the world. We chant “Free Palestine,” but it is actually Palestine that frees us – from the straitjacket of silence and complicity. Here is a beautiful essay on this phrase by Mohammed El-Kurd: “The rallying cry that we are all Palestinians must abandon the metaphor and manifest materially. Meaning, all of us—Palestinians or otherwise—must embody the Palestinian condition, the condition of resistance and refusal, in the lives we lead and the company we keep. Meaning we reject our complicity in this bloodshed and our inertia when confronted with all of that blood. Because Gaza cannot stand alone in sacrifice.” We are seeds: in our thousand, in our millions…

ink and watercolor drawing from sketchbook of a watermelon slice, and seeds scattering down on the ground, and the words, “In our thousands… in our millions… we are all Palestinians.”

This print was part of series of five posters produced in the summer of 2024. Proceeds from the sale of this series will go to AROC, the Arab Resource and Organizing Center, and for Lamea Abuelrous, owner of one of my usual hangouts, Temo's Café in the Mission District, to support members of her family in West Gaza so that they can relocate to safety and receive medical care. Additional donations for the Abuelrous family can be made here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-gaza-family-access-medical-aid-secure-safe-departure.
