Originally created in the mid-90s, shortly after the rise of the Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional, as an illustration for a local newspaper, the New Mission News. After so many marches and protests through San Francisco's Mission District, it was not hard to imagine a ragtag army of liberation armed with wooden guns, poetry, and indigenous imagination, setting up an autonomous municipality.
