I had a strange and intimate experience with a group of short-eared owls in Wyoming while at a residency; big dish-faced creatures spooking out of sagebrush and whirling about, training their strange faces towards me with wide surprised yellow eyes. It’s surreal to be inspected by a large group of large nocturnal birds in the middle of the day in the middle of nowhere. I looked it up- a group of owls is called a parliament. Presumably they were on their way somewhere else- as was I.
