Another free downloadable zine from longterm Justseeds comrade Stefan Christoff in Montreal: Voices Beyond Lockdown: Collective action and care across borders in a time of crisis
This zine is a compilation of interviews Stefan recorded during the first pandemic lockdowns in spring 2020. It is the fifth in the zine series of his Free City Radio project. Zine participants include;: Indigenous photographer Martin Akwiranoron Loft; a Guinean community organizer in Montreal, Mohamed Barry; a musician and criminal defense lawyer Zayid Al-baghdadi; independent documentary filmmaker Zahra Moloo; longtime community organizer at the Immigrant Workers Centre, Mostafa Henaway; poet and educator Shanice Nicole; artist and author Sundus Abdul Hadi; and educator/researcher Brian Aboud.
The key points that are raised in this publication revolve around the critical importance of not forgetting the ways that the pandemic underlined the systematic fault lines in society. Specifically the voices included in the zine address how frameworks of marginalization that impact communities like immigrant workers, the unhoused, autonomous artists and Indigenous peoples were deeply and unequally impacted by the pandemic lockdowns. Beyond critique the interviews lift up living and also ongoing examples of the power of both community organizing and artistic expression to point toward alternative futures, lifting up the voices and communities struggling for transformative change today.
