Patrick Lyoya, Rituals of Commemoration

Rosa Naday Garmendia

This series of posters are a tool and starting place for introducing the public to social issues in the places where they live, as a way of advancing the power of art to educate, build solidarity and inspire people to action.

A large green shape of the state of Michigan serves as the background for this poster. The name “Patrick Lyoya, 2022” is placed in dark blue and black above. The text “Police violence happens here” is printed vertically and in blue. The words “UNARMED!” are printed in large red type. Text on the bottom in white states: “The Fire Next Time J.B.”, and in black: “SHOT in the BACK of the head during traffic STOP.”

“We stand in solidarity with our Palestinian siblings in Gaza and those among our community who are directly and indirectly affected by the current war and genocide by the Israeli settler-colonial regime. Passive observation of the horrors of bombings, genocide, and prolonged apartheid is not our way. We must rise and firmly proclaim that Palestinian Liberation is a Feminist Imperative.” – Feminists for Jina Seattle
