Lois Harada lives and works in Providence, Rhode Island. Originally from Utah, Lois came to Rhode Island to study printmaking at RISD. She currently teaches screen printing at the Community Printshop at AS220 and works as a press operator at DWRI Letterpress where she prints her own work too.
The piece: Same Time, Every Day is a six color letterpress print. The print depicts a pack of monthly birth control pills with the reminder to take them at the same time each day. The pill has created freedom for women to choose if and when they are ready to have children though its accessibility still remains unequal fifty years after it was introduced. I was also inspired by the quote from Margaret Sanger, “No woman can call herself free who does not own and control her body. No woman can call herself free until she can choose consciously whether she will or will not be a mother.”
