On August 20, 1967 in Acapulco, Mexico a group of more than 800 coconut farmers marched against the fraudulent nomination of Jesús Flores Guerrero as president of the Commercial Union of Coconut Producers (Congreso de la Unión Regional de Productores de Copra del Estado de Guerrero), and the imposition of a inflated tax on the production of coconut products. At the coconut farmers’ headquarters they were met with gunfire, killing 35 and injuring over 100. The repression against the 1,800-member cocolero organization, most of which was based in the nearby Costa Grande, was carried out with the connivance of the state government. To this day there has been no justice for the victims.
