This came in the other day from The Committee for the Rescue and Development of Vieques, who were instrumental in the fight to get the US to stop bombing the small Puerto Rican island of Vieques a few years back:
The Committee for the Rescue and Development of Vieques (CPRDV) is in the process of applying for a Full Power Non Commercial Educational Radio license from the Federal Communications Commission.
This is part of a long-term project to establish an educational community radio station based in Vieques which will broadcast to the Eastern Region of Puerto Rico, under the name of RADIO COMUNITARIA VIEQUES-FM (RCV-FM).
The application process requires a series of technical, legal and administrative expenses. The CPRDV has to raise approximately $17,500 before October 12, 2007. All friends of the Vieques Peace and Justice movement are invited to help raise the $3,800 that are still needed to complete this sum.
Radio (Comunitaria) VIEQUES (fm) or Vieques Community FM Radio
Radio production has been an important part of CPRDV activities since 2003 when RADIO VIEQUES was initiated.
Starting on October 20, RADIO VIEQUES will air through WKVM 810 AM, in an extended two-hour format, every Saturday from 3 to 5 in the afternoon. The program will continue focusing on a large variety of social, environmental and cultural issues.
Three new partners will participate in the production of the weekly radio program. Taller Cé (a songwriters collective), Unidad Comunitaria por Culebra and Asociación Pro Desarrollo de Ceiba, have joined the CPRDV to present a lively discussion of topics relevant to the Eastern Region of Puerto Rico along with music of the new generation of Puerto Rican songwriters.
Since its beginnings, RADIO VIEQUES has focused on current affairs with a particular focus on Vieques, Culebra and Ceiba. Radio Vieques is never the less, of interest to a wide audience because it addresses issues of concern to all in Puerto Rico. Because RCV-FM is part of The Committee for the Rescue and Development of Vieques, it has the support of dozens of community, environmental, cultural, Philanthropic, ecumenical and labor organizations.
