This is a portrait of my father’s cat Waylon, who kept him company in the final years of his life and kept me company in the difficult years after his passing. She has a magic eye and is protected here by a halo of flowers, a “Vainags” which is a Latvian flower crown worn especially on summer solstice.
This work started as a single hand cut piece of paper, then translated to a photo etched plate and printed on a Vandercook proofing press, making the negative space slightly embossed, which for me references the original medium of paper-cut¬†¬†perfectly, with it’s subtle dimension.
