I originally made this image for the Critical Resistance Portfolio Project in 2008. I spent that Spring working with neighbors to turn an empty lot in my neighborhood of Southwest Detroit into a vital garden that now plays an important role in that community as a place for meeting, growing and eating food, and resting. I loved the multi-generational nature of it; teenagers stopped by on their way home from school, toddlers pulled carrots out of the ground, elders offered advice and instruction, and smart 30-somethings hooked up incredible irrigation systems out of nothing. This print honors community gardeners everywhere for their chosen task of growing healthy food and people.
