In Rojava and across Kurdistan, women have been central to the struggle against both the Islamic State and for Kurdish self-determination and commununity autonomy and control. The Yekîneyên Parastina Jin (YPJ) are the women's armed units which have been central to this struggle, and "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi" (Women, Life, Freedom) has been their rallying cry.
