AgitArte is a forward-thinking collective of cultural workers, artists, and organizers who are based in Puerto Rico and Boston, MA. They started in 1997 with the aim to use the arts and cultural projects for popular education and agitation, while working directly with the grassroots communities of which they are a part.

Comenzaron en 1997 con el objetivo de utilizar los proyectos artísticos y culturales para la educación y las campañas de acción popular, mientras trabajaban directamente con las comunidades de las que forman parte.
Some readers may also be familiar with Papel Machete, a street and community theater collective, which began in 2006 in P.R. Papel Machete use puppetry, masks, and performance to support struggles of the working class and marginalized communities of Puerto Rico. AgitArte is an organization of working class artists and cultural organizers who work at the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality and ideology. Through a praxis of cultural solidarity, creative process and popular education, we initiate and facilitate arts and cultural projects with grassroots communities that contest U.S. cultural hegemony and propose alternatives to existing systems of oppression. We do this in our creative work by centering the experiences of oppressed people in resistance through interdisciplinary storytelling/media, and in our mutual solidarity, through trainings, workshops and running a physical space for educational programming in Santurce, Puerto Rico.

This blog is spurred by the need to help AgitArte in the face of the recent fire at AgitArte’s cultural workspace and living space in Boston. It is especially heartbreaking because of the time and energy it took to secure the building and that it was only recently made available for AgitArte programming and cultural work. I interviewed AgitArte’s Tina Orlandini recently to ask a few questions about the fire, current projects, and plans for the future. ~Sanya Hyland

Es especialmente doloroso por el tiempo y la energía que tomó adquirir el edificio y que solo recientemente estuvo disponible para la programación y el trabajo cultural de AgitArte. Sanya: Can you talk about the space and the plans for it? / ¿Puedes hablar sobre el espacio y los planes para él?
Tina: AgitArte purchased the building with two working class Boston residents in October 2020 after a long and challenging process navigating the real estate market in the rapidly gentrifying neighborhood of Roxbury. In 2019, one of our longest and most supportive donors committed $1 million for us to purchase space, a dream of ours since AgitArte first started in 1997. We purchased a large home in Santurce, Puerto Rico for our space, Casa Taller Cangrejera, and soon after, secured a multifamily home in Roxbury where one of our staff members was already living. The space is divided into three units and AgitArte owns the top two floors of the building. In the last year since purchasing the house, we’ve been navigating renovations, building violations we inherited from the previous owner, and finding the right partners to co-own and manage the building with. When the fire happened, we were just starting to build out AgitArte’s unit for programming. Our dreams for this cultural space are still in development and will be determined by/with AgitArte staff as well as our community in the Boston area, many of whom have supported us for several years to get to where we are now. So far, we’ve imagined a recording studio for When We Fight, We Win!: The Podcast and other media projects, a permaculture project, artist residences, shared workshop space, and a silkscreen studio.
Tina: AgitArte compró el edificio con dos residentes de Boston de clase trabajadora en octubre de 2020 después de un largo y complicado proceso de búsqueda por el mercado inmobiliario en el vecindario de Roxbury, que se gentrifica rápidamente. En 2019, uno de nuestros donantes más antiguos y solidarios comprometió $1 millón para comprar el espacio, uno de nuestros sueños desde que AgitArte comenzó en 1997. Compramos una casa grande en Santurce, Puerto Rico para nuestro espacio, Casa Taller Cangrejera, y poco después, aseguramos una casa multifamiliar en Roxbury donde ya vivía uno de los miembros de nuestro personal. El espacio está dividido en tres unidades y AgitArte es propietaria de los dos pisos superiores del edificio. En el último año desde que compramos la casa, hemos estado trabajando en renovaciones, resolviendo problemas legales del edificio que heredamos del propietario anterior y buscando los socios adecuados para ser copropietarios y administrar el edificio. Cuando ocurrió el incendio, estábamos empezando a construir la unidad de programación de AgitArte. Nuestros sueños para este espacio cultural aún están en desarrollo y serán determinados por el personal de AgitArte, así como nuestra comunidad en el área de Boston, muchos de los cuales nos han apoyado durante varios años para llegar a donde estamos ahora. Hemos imaginado un estudio de grabación para When We Fight, We Win !: The Podcast y otros proyectos de medios, un proyecto de permacultura, residencias de artistas, un espacio de taller compartido y un estudio de serigrafía.
Sanya: How does it connect to the Casa Taller Cangrejera (Santurce, Puerto Rico)? / ¿Cómo se conecta con la Casa Taller Cangrejera (Santurce, Puerto Rico)?
Tina: All of AgitArte’s work is connected and centers cultural solidarity and popular education for liberation. Casa Taller Cangrejera was formed in 2015 out of a rented space in Santurce that was originally the Papel Machete workshop. Over time and with additional funding, we were able to rent the whole building which allowed us to host artists in residence, present theater performances, offer workshops, and build an urban garden to promote food sovereignty. When the opportunity came to purchase a permanent home for Casa Taller, we jumped on it and were lucky enough to find a space to grow our creative work and support our community through mutual aid efforts. Though Santurce and Roxbury are very different places with specific communities, Casa Taller is certainly serving as a model for the Roxbury Cultural Workspace in terms of developing processes for collective living, operating as a space for mutual aid, and meeting the needs of AgitArte creative projects.
Tina: Todo el trabajo de AgitArte está conectado y centra la solidaridad cultural y la educación popular para la liberación. Casa Taller Cangrejera se formó en 2015 a partir de un espacio rentado en Santurce que originalmente era el taller de Papel Machete. Con el tiempo y con fondos adicionales, pudimos rentar todo el edificio, lo que nos permitió albergar a artistas en residencia, presentar representaciones teatrales, ofrecer talleres y construir un huerto urbano para promover la soberanía alimentaria. Cuando surgió la oportunidad de comprar un lugar permanente para Casa Taller, lo aprovechamos y tuvimos la suerte de encontrar un espacio para hacer crecer nuestro trabajo creativo y apoyar a nuestra comunidad a través de esfuerzos de ayuda mutua. Aunque Santurce y Roxbury son lugares muy diferentes con comunidades específicas, Casa Taller definitivamente funciona como modelo para el espacio de trabajo cultural de Roxbury en términos de desarrollo de procesos para la vida colectiva, operando como un espacio de ayuda mutua y satisfaciendo las necesidades de los proyectos creativos de AgitArte.
Sanya: What were some of the projects that AgitArte was working on before the fire? / ¿Cuáles eran algunos de los proyectos en los que estaban trabajando antes del incendio?
Tina: We were and continue to work on When We Fight, We Win!: The Podcast, now in its third season. Continuing the work of the book by the same name, the podcast brings you stories, creative strategies, and political analysis from current grassroots struggles for liberation. We are also collaborating with Papel Machete on one of our most ambitious projects, On the Eve of Abolition, a radical imaginary, multimedia theater and puppetry play about the last day of the last prison in the United States. Another long-term project we are working on is Mucho Mango, a graphic novel adaptation of Papel Machete’s 2010 tabletop puppet play El Barrio del Mangó Bajito. In the story, four cousins fight gentrification when their late grandmother’s house is destroyed to make room for a tropical-hip mango-flavored drink franchise, Mucho Mango®. To win, they must uncover the histories of the neighborhood and, in the process, inherit a lifelong lesson left by their grandmother: el barrio –and its people– are not for sale. In addition to these projects, we also have ongoing programming happening year-round which you can read more about on our website, along with archived projects from AgitArte’s nearly 25-year history.
Tina: Estuvimos y seguimos trabajando en When We Fight, We Win !: The Podcast, ahora en su tercera temporada. Continuando con el trabajo del libro del mismo nombre, el podcast trae historias, estrategias creativas y análisis políticos de las luchas de base actuales por la liberación. También estamos colaborando con Papel Machete en uno de nuestros proyectos más ambiciosos, On the Eve of Abolition, un imaginario radical, teatro multimedia y obra de títeres sobre el último día de la última prisión en Estados Unidos. Otro proyecto a largo plazo en el que estamos trabajando es Mucho Mango, una adaptación de novela gráfica de la obra de títeres de mesa de 2010 de Papel Machete, El Barrio del Mangó Bajito. En la historia, cuatro primos luchan contra la gentrificación cuando la casa de su difunta abuela es destruida para dejar espacio para una franquicia de bebidas con sabor a mango tropical, Mucho Mango®. Para ganar, deben descubrir las historias del barrio y, de paso, heredar una lección que dejó su abuela: el barrio –y su gente– no están a la venta. Sanya: What are the plans to bounce back from this devastating event? / ¿Cuáles son los planes para recuperarse de este incendio terrible?
Tina: We’re so grateful for the support our community has already shown us since the fire. Right now, we are taking everything one step at a time, starting with finding long-term housing for the residents who were displaced from the fire, which we were able to do recently thanks to folks who have given to our grassroots fundraiser. As we have done in the past, we’re shifting our work to care for our people, meet immediate needs and recover from this disaster. No matter the conditions, we will continue our cultural organizing work however and wherever we can.
Tina: Estamos muy agradecidos por el apoyo que nuestra comunidad ya nos ha brindado desde el incendio. En este momento, estamos tomando todo paso a paso, comenzando por encontrar viviendas a largo plazo para los residentes que fueron desplazados por el incendio, lo que pudimos hacer recientemente gracias a las personas que han donado a nuestra recaudación de fondos. Como lo hemos hecho en el pasado, estamos cambiando nuestro trabajo para cuidar de nuestra gente, satisfacer las necesidades inmediatas y recuperarnos de este desastre. Independientemente de las condiciones, continuaremos con nuestro trabajo de organización cultural como y siempre que podamos.
Sanya: How can people help? / ¿Cómo podemos ayudar?
Tina: If folks are able, we ask that you give to and/or share our fundraising campaign. We are raising $50,000 in total: $25,000 of which will go toward rebuilding from the fire and $25,000 that will help us sustain our cultural work in Boston and Puerto Rico. As we’ve learned from the past, oftentimes disasters like this cause major delays and setbacks for our ongoing projects and programming. So we’re asking folks to help us both recover from the fire and support the cultural work that is the lifeblood of AgitArte.
