This is my print for the forthcoming War Is Trauma portfolio, a collaboration between Justseeds and Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) .
I made a few extra outside of the edition for the portfolio. This project originated a year ago as a way to take advantage of most of Justseeds being in Chicago for our annual planning retreat to work directly with IVAW to create new prints about the IVAW campaign “Operation Recovery: Stop the Deployment of Traumatized Troops” and G.I. Resistance. We went out in teams to wheatpaste the prints all over Chicago to cover up advertisements and “bring the war home.” My contribution was a wallpaper pattern formed from a tessellated IVAW logo, printed with bright colors in a split fountain. The pattern served as a vibrant backdrop for large scale stenciled portraits of troops who are resisting redeployment.
For this new, fancier version of my wallpaper pattern, I adjusted the pattern to make a two-layer print of split fountains, resulting in a super-colorful rainbow rolled interpretation of resistance to both war and repressive social norms enforced by the military.
