The vaquita marina is the smallest of all the cetaceans and once lived in the thousands in the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California) in Mexico. Today they are on the brink of extinction, with less than 10 known to live in the wild. They have been decimated by illegal totoaba fishing, which uses near-invisible gill nets to catch that lucrative fish. The vaquita marina drowns in these nets. Fisherman who live along the north and western shores of the sea continue to poach the totoaba for their swim bladders, which fetches thousands of dollars on the Chinese illegal market.
La vaquita marina es la mas pequeña de todos los cetáceos y su habitat se encuentro en el Golfo de California, México. Su población ha bajado de los miles, hasta menos que 10 hoy en día. Han sido diezmados por la pesca ilegal de totoaba, que utiliza redes de enmalle casi invisibles para capturar ese lucrativo pez. La vaquita marina se ahoga en estas redes. Los pescadores que viven a lo largo de las costas norte y oeste del mar continúan cazando furtivamente la totoaba para sus vejigas natatorias, que se vende por miles de dólares en el mercado ilegal chino.
