Pasionaria and Documentación are the 9th and 10th in a series of font adaptations taken from the publications of two revolutionary feminist movements (the anarchist Mujeres Libres and the communist Agrupación de Mujeres Antifascistas (AMA), both active during the Spanish Civil War).
Pasionaria AMA was adapted from the cover of the publication Pasionaria: Revista de las Mujeres Antifascistas de Valencia, an organ of the Valencia Chapter of the AMA. La Pasionaria was the nickname of Dolores Ibarruri, a Spanish communist activist, orator, and icon who was also on this magazine’s advisory board. Throughout each issue there are peppered references to Ibarruri including her transcribed speeches, photos and comics of her and her distinctive profile, and even poems about her. Its interior layout is sober and straightforward, using conventional typefaces and with none of the experimentations with spot color or creative layouts of, say, Mujeres Libres or other AMA publications like Mujeres.
The magazine’s title was drawn in an expressive cursive script, but this font was taken from the under-title: hand drawn, all caps, very scrappy, and really dissonant in that publication’s overall vibe. That script was cleaned up and at this point, for better or worse, bears only a faint echo of the original–the extended cross piece of the ‘A’ and the ‘H’ and the slight slant, both implying motion and action.
The second font, Documentación ML, was derived from the under-title used on the first 3 issues of the publication Mujeres Libres–Cultura Y Documentación Social (this under-title was dropped from successive issues). Its square, rough, and thin letterforms have a sense of unpolished urgency and bear an uncanny kinship to modern graffiti scripts.
Documentación ML also includes some of our first forays into Cyrillic fonts (the font Kiki also has Cyrillic glyphs), with Ukrainian and Russian letterforms supported.
The attached zip file contains two OpenType fonts: Pasionaria AMA & Documentación ML.
