Cancel Canada Day

by Zola
July 2, 2021

Since First Nations communities have started to search the grounds of past Indian Residential Schools to find the bodies of the (estimated up to 15 000) children that never came back, calls to #cancelcanadaday have made rounds. Some official celebrations throughout the country were cancelled while grasroots Indigenous organizers invited people to gather and march to mourn the 1323 unmarked graves and found to date, following the #bringourchildrenhome hashtag campaign.

Tens of thousands of people responded and showed up to the march in so-called Montreal, occupied and unceded Kanien’kéhà:ka and Anishinabe territories. I made this banner inspired by the churches set on fire on First Nations reservations in the past few weeks.
