Make Drag Not War

This image is from Celebrate People’s History/Iraq Veterans Against the War: Ten Years of Fighting for Peace and Justice, a portfolio that celebrated IVAW’s first ten years and was produced by Justseeds, IVAW, Booklyn, Repetitive Press, and the Civilian Soldier Alliance.

(IVAW is now known as About Face: Veterans Against the War)

A vibrant pen and ink drawing of a mustached drag queen in a military helmet, and flowers adorning her. In pink cursive text it states, “Make Drag, Not War,” against a light green background pattern of high heels. Smaller text states, “Make Drag, Not War! was an annual benefit for Veteran Artists from 2009 – 2012 that paired some of San Francisco’s most theatrically talented drag queens with recent military veterans to tell their stories through drag performances. Dance Mission Theater donated their space for special nights of ‘dragtivist’ theater touching upon issues affecting veterans such as post-traumatic stress disorder, ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.”
